Hiroyuki Nakahara grew up in the greater Tokyo area and attended both middle and high school in central Tokyo, thriving in the culturally stimulating atmosphere. Hiro attended the University of Tokyo for both undergraduate and graduate studies. As an undergraduate, he was among a group of students at several universities who began to play lacrosse in Japan, enjoying the excitement of initiating a new sport trend. As a graduate, Hiro received his doctorate in 1997 studying sequential decision-making in biological systems, while also including a term as a visiting graduate student at the University of California, San Diego. He then joined Shun-ichi Amari’s laboratory at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, later in 2006, founding his own lab, the Laboratory for Integrated Theoretical Neuroscience at RIKEN Brain Science institute and since 2018, at RIKEN Center for Brain Science.
